Business leaders are faced with an unpredictable and frightening economic scenario - one they've never experienced before. First came the dot.com crash of 2000, followed by the recent terrorist attacks, frightening investors and crippling the financial nerve center of our country.

Even before recent events American business had been in a twelve-month economic decline.

Each year for the last five years over 45,000 corporate bankruptcies have impacted on the lives of over a million people annually.

Add to that the permanent loss of over 1,000,000 manufacturing jobs since 1999 and USA businesses face serious restructuring in this new one-world market.

Right sizing and scaling down are now normal business tactics. Over 800,000 Pink slips have replaced signing bonuses of just a year or so ago and many businesses are "encouraging" employees to use up vacation days or work 4-day workweeks.

No one ever downsized to greatness.

Politicians have their hands full defending our rights. They need the help of strong, innovative senior executive teams and CEO's to rebuild America's confidence and jump-start the economy now.

To do that a new breed of business leader is needed. Old management techniques need to be replaced with new leadership skills and business acumen. Traditional Business Planning Doesn't Work

Too often executives tinker with, add to, or subtract from last year's plan. If you want more of the same, just do more of the same. If you had a poor or mediocre result then all you will get is a similar mediocre result. Looking forward, even if you had a good result, incremental planning will now produce a poor result because the economy has stalled, and recovery is not predicted until mid-2002.

In my direct experience and in observing the planning process in hundreds of companies, an incremental approach to planning occurs just all too often and the approach provides self-limiting outcomes.

The approach is self-limiting in that assumptions (too often based on perception and not fact) are made and self-imposed constraints follow.

Additionally, organizations go through life-cycles, just like the life-cycles people experience.

However, often senior management is not aware of the company's life-cycle stage. If the stage is recognized, management may be unable to get the organization back to the flexibility of a much younger, healthier, growing organization.

Just as a family owned business must successfully transition from the founder to other family members, so too must organizations transition successfully through changes in leadership, economic shifts, or culture in order to get the organization on to a new growth cycle. This requires a vibrant leadership vision, new goal-driven strategies, and implementation of that vision by building and retaining high-performance teams.

However, it is difficult to change an organization. The culture you have today evolved over an extended period and changing it will require a sustained commitment. If you relax, the culture will slip right back to the starting point.

Any transition typically causes conflict that must be managed. Often the organization may not be able to transition effectively without intervention from an outside influence or from the occurrence of a triggering event.

The risk is that without change, you will lose your more dynamic people, lose market share and, unfortunately, in some cases, the organization may die. I have presided over the dissolution of several entities that were unable to make the transition.

Much of the thinking we do is incremental in nature. For example, in business you spend a lot of time reviewing where you are relative to where you have come from, and also spend a considerable amount of energy benchmarking yourselves against your competitors.

While an incremental approach is human nature, it is also self-limiting because as assumptions are made, self-imposed constraints follow.

The Greenfields Planning process ensures you start with a clean slate. A key element in this approach is to avoid incremental, self-limiting thinking.

The Greenfields Approach is straightforward:


. If you were starting this Business or Business Unit today, would you do business the same way?

. If you would not do things the same way, then why are you doing it that way now?

If you are looking for a quantum difference in your business then the planning process should not commence with incremental, self-limiting thinking. Determination of actual constraints or finding ways to work around perceived constraints are the final stage in the planning process #6 - Implementation Action Items. The Greenfields planning process has six key elements to be explored in the context of your business, and it is now time to start rethinking your business and developing plans which need to deliver sustained high-performance results. The planning process is rigorous, urgent, and driven by Results-Based Leaders.

Remember, it is planning without constraint.

1.SITUATION ANALYSIS - Ensure broad participation in the completion of a detailed Situation Analysis to identify all areas in your organization requiring major review and change.

Note that an organization in decline will typically have low-growth or no-growth expectations.

Many of those in the organization will be less likely to want to even attempt to change or recapture market share and will reward those who 'follow and don't rock the boat.' Generally, these organizations are more interested in retaining internal relationships than taking personal risks usually associated with change.

Accordingly, in those cases it will be important to form a more objective Venture Team to carry out the Situational Analysis.

How do you complete a Situational Analysis?

Determine those five or six Critical Success Factors - critical to the success of your organization or functions within your organization, including typical Strategic Plan elements: Market Research and the Opportunity for market share gains; Marketing Production R Finance - [new month-by month Cashflow and Profit Forecasting required]; Human Resources; Organizational design timeline for attainment; players needed to produce the result; and the anticipated result are always contained in Greenfields Action Plans.

If Action Items require a team approach to their implementation, then the composition of the team must be identified and put in place, but remember, responsibility for achieving the result can only be delegated to one person. 4.MUTUAL TRUST - Building trust and respect around the need for change is an imperative because without it, the desired changes simply will not occur. Undertake widespread education on the need for change, and depending on the amount of time you have (i.e., how fast your business or cashflow is slipping), this education should continue over several months.

This will not be the case for those organizations in crisis, and after two or three briefings on the situation or crisis (within a few days) there should be Implementation Updates on a regular basis. In the latter case trust will occur through a combination of initial briefings and the Implementation Updates.

A willingness to trust may have been initially withheld, but once those working with you see the urgency of actions, the results and your willingness to share information, then they will start to develop trust and respect.

5.CONFLICT RESOLUTION - Wherever there is change, poor communication, uncertainty, or poor results, there will be conflict.

Poor results require successful organizations to get beyond the 'blame game' and where there is significant change, the organization must, through this Greenfields Approach, provide support in conflict resolution.

Conflict is healthy when it is channeled towards producing the desired result towards a common goal. That result must be beneficial to the organization and those associated with it, rather than being rooted in the self-interest of just one person.

Another frequent cause of conflict relates to personality or leadership style differences.

Regardless of personality differences or leadership styles it is not just a question of resolving the conflict, but how it is resolved that becomes important.

Wherever possible during conflict resolution mutual respect should be retained, or if this is not possible, work team reassignment may provide the only alternative to retaining an effective implementation program.

6.IMPLEMENTATION COMMITMENT - You have now completed the Greenfields Planning Process without constraint, but as you know all organizations operate with some form of constraint, whether it be cashflow, not having the right personnel, or even time-to-market product issues.

Implementation plans are now evaluated in the context of "Given our specific constraints"

What is realistic? What is possible and practical?

Action Items are adopted and prioritized according to answers to these questions.

In my experience, over 90% of all plan failures relate to a lack of sustained commitment to implementation, with only 10% of the failures arising from poor strategies contained in the plan.

The Greenfields approach will deliver Action Plans to facilitate the rapid turnaround of your organization and provides you with an effective interim plan. Short-term successes give validity to your overall plan and provide the time required for more sustained implementation through a cultural shift.

Implementation Plans must be managed and require not just the weight of key leaders behind them, but their active commitment and participation.

Without continued open communication and the sustained commitment of your senior management group then the desired results simply will not occur.

After several months of effective implementation, you will be in a position to add the dimension of more long-term thinking to your planning process.

If you want to do something better, then under the Greenfields approach you had better do something different.

If you want to do something different then you had better change your behavior.

Have you: i.Created a sense of Urgency? ii.Created and over communicated your organization's future vision? iii.Built a guiding coalition around that Vision? iv.Provided the opportunity for short-term wins? v.Provided a process to anchor changes in a new corporate culture?

By adopting and implementing the Greenfields Planning method, and by changing your leadership style and performance, you have now set the course for a profitable sustainable long-term business result.

Remember, while you are implementing change the economy will shift further, the market will move, but most of all your people will need strong centrally directed leadership (not autocratic management) to keep the focus and achieve the result.

" You have been dating for close to 2 years now. And things are going really well. She laughs at your jokes, even when most people think you are really corny. You are comfortable enough to fart in front of her, and she hardly cringes. She's great with your dogs or your sister's kids. You can totally imagine growing old with her, and being with her for the rest of your life. Yes, you are ready to propose. If you are tempted to just casually ask her to marry you over the phone when you next speak to her, I will stop you right there. A marriage proposal is something that your girl would take very seriously. And it is an occasion that friends and relatives would ask for details for years to come. "So how did he propose?" You do not want her to say, "Ah well, it was really boring. He asked me to marry him over the phone." You want to give her a proposal to remember - a proposal that she will be proud to tell over and over again, and each time she retells it, she will remember how much effort you have put into it, and how thoughtful you are, and how much you love her. So, how do you go about it? Here's a 5-steps approach that would result in your perfect proposal! "Step 1: Telling her parents" If you have been dating seriously, chances are you would have met up with her parents. By informing them, you would have scored Brownie points, as her parents would be really impressed that they have such a sensitive future son-in-law. Some guys I know even involve her parents in the proposal process as the girl is really close to her parents. Of course, there would be exceptions. If your girlfriend is estranged from her parents, skip this step. "Step 2: Getting the ring" Some girls like to choose their own engagement rings, but I personally think that takes out the surprise element of the process. And it's not as romantic. If you have previously spoken about marriage, then you probably would have a good idea of the type of ring that she likes. Or if not, enlist the help of her best friend or sister who usually would be more than happy to help you out. "Step 3: Thinking about the setting" Think about your girl's personality. Would she prefer a more intimate setting, where there are just two of you? Or does she prefer to have an audience? If she likes to have an audience, then indulge her, and give her a big one. Try to recall the proposals in movies that she said, "Aww... that's so sweet!" You could consider doing something totally out of the ordinary e.g. on a hot-air balloon, or on top of Mount Kinabalu if both of you are avid trekkers, or even proposing over the radio. Or you could surprise her in the course of a normal day. Like when she's coming home from work, and when she opens the door, there you are, kneeling down on one knee with the ring, with flowers in the room. Or when you are at both your favourite restaurant and she finds the ring on the dessert platter. The options are endless, and it is up to how creative and memorable you want to make it. "Step 4: Be formal" As you know, this scene is going to stay ingrained in her mind, and would be retold to friends, choose your words carefully. Do not trivialize it by saying, "So, wanna get married?" Stick to the traditional, "Will you marry me?" As for whether to bend down on one knee, this would depend on the setting. However, do consider whether to do it, especially if your girl is the more 'old-fashioned' or the 'romantic' type, as she may well be expecting it and would be utterly disappointed if you didn't. "Step 5: Be prepared for her answer" If you have come to this stage, chances are you are quite sure that she's going to say yes. But just in case, do prepare for the 0.001% chance that she might say no, or she needs to think about it. And so if she's says yes, rejoice with her! Dance with her. Hug her. Swirl her around. The worst thing that can happen at this juncture is an excited girl with a guy with a blank look on his face. And finally, a word of advice... when you are thinking about your proposal, stay true to your relationship and who you are. Remember the reason you are doing this - you are asking the woman you love for her hand. A proposal with 'the full works' might work for some relationships but for others, it might be the recital of a handwritten love poem or a song declaring your love. Their views on gender issues, especially in their columns from the 50s-70s were enlightening, hysterical, and frightening, sometimes all at once. The double standards could be infuriating. Their views on the issue of modesty represent a sort of microcosm of a culture that was intent on keeping femininity in check and on insuring that boys conform to a certain masculine ideal. Whether things have changed much is open to question, but we suspect it is a good sign that a lot of people likely will find these views old fashioned ane even infuriating.In 1969, a parent wrote to Dear Abby complaining because her 14-year-old son was told he would have to swim in the nude at school with his male classmates, and the boy felt uncomfortable about it. Abby offered no sympathy: "[H]e had better overcome his shyness about nudity in the presence of other boys," she lectured, "or he is apt to be uncomfortable much of his life." Abby's sister, Ann Landers, was even more direct. In a 1974 column, she bluntly told a 15-year-old boy who was embarrassed to shower with other boys: "You have a problem, Son." She rejected the boy's assertion that the school was invading his privacy as "a cover up for something else." She told the lad he needed to see the school counselor. There was something wrong with him.But when the genders were reversed, the answer was completely different. "He walks into the kitchen and fixes a bowl of cereal." (If you're wondering how the neighbor knows all this, your guess is as good as ours.) "Then he stands at the counter, watching the morning sports shows while eating his breakfast in the nude." (Holy cow! The neighbor even knows what he's watching on TV!) "There is absolutely no evidence of arousal of any kind." (Thank goodness we have this neighbor to closely monitor the boy's penile engorgement.) During the Second World War, Winston Churchill had a framed inscription on his desk that said, "Its not enough to say we are doing our best. We must succeed in doing what is necessary."

The world demands results. Good intentions and promises are no use to it. And one of the best ways for any leader to get results is to employ a strategy, which is a plan, method or series of actions for obtaining a goal or specific outcome. It doesnt matter what job you have or how many people you are leading, if you dont come to grips with the challenges of developing and executing strategies, youre limiting your abilities to get results.

In a sense, strategies are promissory notes, payment due upon demand. One reason for their becoming less than worthy tender is they are not backed by a Leadership Strategy.

Leadership Strategy -- have you heard of it? I bet you havent. For one thing, it isnt taught at business schools. And for another, even in the unlikely case that you have heard of it and know what it is, you probably dont know how to make it happen.

In this article, Ill show you what a Leadership Strategy is and ways to institute it. It can be far more important than your standard business strategy.

Whereas a business strategy seeks to marshal an organizations functions around central, organizing concepts, a leadership strategy, on the other hand, seeks to obtain, organize, and direct the heartfelt commitment of the people who must carry out the business strategy.

The business strategy is the sail, the Leadership Strategy the ballast. Without a Leadership Strategy, most business strategies capsize.

To understand what a Leadership Strategy is, lets look at your past leadership activities.

Divide a single sheet of paper into two columns labeled A & B. At the top of column A write "business (or organizational) strategies". On top of column B write, "Leadership Strategies" -- in other words, what strategies were used to obtain peoples heartfelt commitments to carry out the business strategies?

Think of the strategies your organization has developed during the past few years. They might be product strategies, service strategies, growth strategies, sales strategies, marketing strategies. You do not have to explain it in detail, just give each strategy a tag and write down the tag.

Did the listings in column A match the listings in column B? Were there any listings at all in column B? That gap between what was in column A and what was in column B is a killer gap. It means that the business strategies havent been augmented by Leadership Strategies. And when that happens, results suffer.

I dont care if you lead three people, three hundred or three thousand and more. I dont care if youre in sales, youre a plant supervisor, a marketing manager or a COO, CFO or CEO. Youre going to need a Leadership Strategy.

And if you dont think you need any kind of strategy, think again. Whatever job youre doing takes strategic thinking. In fact, getting in the habit of looking at whatever you do in strategic terms gives you a great advantage in your career advancement.

The roots of the word "strategy" come from two German words, the first meaning an encamped or spread out army and then second word meaning "to drive." In other words, a strategy gives direction, organization and force to an otherwise scattered organization.

Most business leaders are good a developing business strategies. Theyre taught how at business schools. But Ill bet that 9,999 out of 10,000 leaders dont know what a Leadership Strategy is, let alone how it fits in with a business strategy.

Leadership Strategies are not taught at business schools because such Strategies find their meaning not in abstract formulations or case studies but in what cant be taught but must be experienced, process and relationship.

And if you havent thought of a Leadership Strategy before, start thinking about it now, because it can boost your career in many ways. Most leaders develop their strategies in bunkers, without taking into consideration those outside the bunker who have to implement it. Unwittingly, they buy into the "fallacy of automatic reciprocity" -- the conviction that their devotion to the cause is automatically reciprocated by the people they lead. Its a fallacy because reciprocity is not automatic. It cant be ordered. It must be cultivated and earned.

Here, then, are five steps to developing a Leadership Strategy.

(1) Understand your business strategy. There are many books and courses on developing business strategies. I dont want to re-invent this wheel. Suffice to say you should clearly develop that strategy.

(2) Identify the dream(s) of your cause leaders.

Why do I say "dreams"? Far from being fluff, dreams are the stuff that hard, measured results are made of.

Look at it this way: Leadership is motivational or its stumbling in the dark. The best leaders dont order people to do a job, the best leaders motivate people to want to do the job.

The trouble is the vast majority of leaders dont delve into the deep aspects of human motivation and so are unable to motivate people effectively.

Drill down through goals and aims and aspirations and ambitions and you hit the bedrock of motivation, the dream. Many leaders fail to take it into account.

Dreams are not goals and aims. Goals are the results toward which efforts are directed. The realization of a dream might contain goals, which can be stepping stones on the way to the attaining dreams. But the attainment of a goal does not necessarily result in the attainment of a dream.

For instance, Martin Luther King did not say, "I have a goal." Or "I have an aim." The power of that speech was in the "I have a dream".

Dreams are not aspirations and ambitions. Aspirations and ambitions are strong desires to achieve something. King didnt say he had an aspiration or ambition that "....one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." He said he had a dream.

If you are a leader speaking to peoples aspirations and ambitions, you are speaking to something that motivates them, yes; but you are not necessarily tapping into the heartwood of their motivation.

After all, one might aspire or be ambitious to achieve a dream. But ones aspiration and ambition may also be connected to things of lesser importance than a dream.

A dream embraces our most cherished longings. It embodies our very identity. We often wont feel fulfilled as human beings until we realize our dreams.

If leaders are avoiding peoples dreams, if leaders are simply setting goals (as important as goals are), they miss the best of opportunities to help those people take ardent action to achieve great results.

I teach leaders to have their organizations get into the realm of achieving "more results faster, continually." To do so, you must first take the trouble to understand the dreams of the people you lead.

(3) Create a Shared Dream. If your vision of where you want the organization to go and their dream of where they want to go are shared, you call it a Shared Dream. Furthermore, you cant go to the next step unless you have developed a Shared Dream.

Look at it this way: The critical issue of the Leadership Strategy isnt the motivation of the leaders. As a leader, you must be motivated. If youre not motivated, you shouldnt be leading. The critical issue is: Can you transfer your motivation to the people so they are as motivated as you are?

(By the way, the Shared Dream is not "win/win". As youll see, its much deeper and richer relationship than the self-limiting "win/win"; for unlike "win/win", the Shared Dream is an on-going relationship process from which flow mutually beneficial expectations and solutions.)

(4) Turn the Shared Dream into a Leadership Strategy. The Leadership Strategy is the Shared Dream manifested by an action plan.

In the action plan, delineate milestones that take you to the Shared Dream. The first milestone may be a comprehensive, rigorous identification of the needs of the cause leaders and how those needs dovetail into the business strategy. (Remember, you can use this process with any number of cause leaders. Just scale it up to the number you require.)

Churchill had it right, "... we must succeed in doing what is necessary."

And one of the best ways for any leader to get people to succeed in doing what is necessary is to combine a business strategy with a Leadership Strategy.

1. Today, in the 21st century, Game has flourished into a major industry, helping many men to become successful with the women of their dreams. Game has grown into the Media, into books and shows like "The Pickup Artist". Of the most prominent PUA Gurus of today are David Deangelo, Neil Strauss [Style], Mystery, Tyler Durden [RSD], Ross Jeffries, Black Richards, and several others. These Gurus have often large followings, and each have their own distinct style of seduction.

2. Here's some steps to get you on your way to PUA-dom.

3. Select a style of seduction, or Method, to study under. Purchase the material they offer, and study it. Once you've become more skilled and feel that you at least have a firm grasp on that method, you may move onto another one. The idea of learning many.Methods originated from Neil Strauss, a famous PUA among the community and author of the bestseller "The Game".

4. Women who are aware of the Community [The Community being the combined world of men who are dedicated to learning seduction] will try to say things like "That would never work on me" and "That's so immature". Don't let these women fool you - if these Methods didn't work on them, then the Methods wouldn't be flourishing as they are today.

5. Your friends will also try to stop your learning by calling it "Stupid" and saying that "It'll never work". From here, you have two choices. You can either convince them to join in your studies [some are much more eager than others], or you can just keep them in the dark.

6. If you have the coin to dish out, attending a Method's "Bootcamp" is often beneficial to those just beginning. Bootcamps are taught by Instructors who have a very firm grasp on their Method and have had higher than average success with women. Some bootcamps can cost upwards of 3,000.

7. Set realistic goals, and always refer to your community's Forums for help. If you go out expecting to all of a sudden start dating supermodels, then you're going to be sorely disappointed.

Tips

1. Always remain positive. There is no use in being negative or giving up because you messed up your first set.

2. Have fun learning Game and sarging! Game should never be a chore.

3. Make friends within the Community, and go out sarging together. It's amazing what two friends helping each other can do.

Warnings

1. First and foremost, there are NO shortcuts to becoming a PUA. No "magic bullets". You must learn the hard way, though Methods make the "hard way" considerably easier, ironically.

2. Some Gurus are fakes. Many Forums have Threads about these fakes, but always do your research before dedicating yourself to a Method.

3. Many Methods will say things like "Instant Success With Women!" or things like that. Some will make absurd claims [Some, amazingly, are true claims], but again it circles back to doing your research.

There was a veritable treat of lovelies to vote for this month in our Woman Of The Month poll. With stiff competition from the likes of Eva Green and Liv Tyler, Helena Bonham Carter quite frankly cleaned up, with a whopping 52% of the votes!

Born the daughter of a merchant banker and a psychotherapist in 1966 in Golders Green London, Carter is the youngest of three children. She has an interesting heritage as her great-grandfather, Herbert H. Asquith, was the former Prime Minister who lead the nation during World War I and was one of the longest running Prime Ministers in British history.

Bonham Carter in fact has a sprawling family tree, distantly related to the author of the James Bond books, Ian Fleming, and also has connections to Florence Nightingale, among lots of other gentry and diplomats. It's not surprising that she has planted herself so firmly in the spotlight with that kind of background!

"Her early life wasn't easy, her mother suffered a nervous breakdown when Helena was just five years old and her father suffered a stroke leaving him wheelchair bound. Bonham Carter has seemingly taken all of this in her stride asking her mother to read through her scripts to give a psychological insight into the roles and (when her father was alive) studied his mannerisms to apply to her role in The Theory Of Flight "(1998)", "in which she played a woman dying of motor neurons disease.

She attended a girls school in Hampstead, London and turned her hand to acting at an early age of 13 years old. It was her acting career that lead her to be denied admission to Kings College. Her grades were not the problem, it was thought that she would leave college to pursue acting instead.

Bonham Carter started out doing various TV movies from 1983 (at just 17 years' old) with her debut role in "A Pattern Of Roses". She had roles in many TV series and movies such as "A Room With A View, "Miami Vice, Hamlet "and "Merlin, "but it was her role in "Fight Club "that really stood out in our minds as her most memorable early movie roles in 1999, where she won a new set of cult fans for her role as Maria Singer.

"This set herself firmly in peoples minds as being the 'go-to' person for quirky female roles, requently collaborating with partner Tim Burton (whom she met on the set of Planet of the Apes "in 2001), alongside other Burton faves such as Johnny Depp in "Corpse Bride "(2005) and "Sweeney Todd "(2007).

More recently she has changed up her usual acting style in "The Kings Speech "(2010), where she showed that she doesn't always have to be type cast.

Of course, the reason why she was part of our Woman Of The Month poll was due to her role in the Harry Potter franchise. Most recently in "The Deathly Hallows "where she firmly put her stamp on the crazed Bellatrix Lestrange. There really was no better casting for this role.

1. Helena lives with Tim Burton in Belsize Park, London. They live in seperate houses with an adjoining doorway as they like their personal space.
